Chardonnay is one of the original 1988 plantings at Mount Majura Vineyard. By the time new owners were interested in expanding the vineyard in 1999, there were a series of lovely vintages of Chardonnay already made, the first being 1991, and perhaps the best being 1994.
A significantly larger area of Chardonnay was planted in the North Block in 1999, using two clones, I10V1 and I10V5. The clone used in the original planting is not recorded.
While the soil in the two Chardonnay patches is very similar, the younger vines in the North Block are more vigorous, with larger canopies that give better protection against sunburn. This fruit is typically intense, with good acid and suits the tighter style of Chardonnay that we now favour. Fruit from the original vines tends to be more opulent and rounded.
Wine from the two patches is kept separate in barrel until blending trials before bottling determine the final wine.
