Varietal Graciano is a rare and distinctive wine. The bouquet is intense, with aromas of black pepper, red berries, dried herbs and gum honey, while the palate is fresh, bright and graceful.
Graciano originates in the Rioja region of Spain, where it typically provides only a small proportion (5%) of the blend. Being a variety that retains acid at ripeness, it is used to add freshness or 'grace' to the blend, hence the name.
We planted Graciano in 2002 after having developed an interest in that other Spanish variety, Tempranillo. The first harvest in 2005 failed to ripen properly and the wine was not bottled. We are finding the variety sensitive to a deficiency in micro-nutrients in our soil and so it takes some time to get the vines strong enough to ripen the crop. Bunch-thinning is important too.
