Our experiment with Tempranillo has taught us that 'new' varieties can be very rewarding, and Graciano followed logically as it comes from Rioja, probably the best known Tempranillo region in Spain.
As with Tempranillo, Graciano is a late-budburst variety, and this is useful to us (just as in its Spanish home) in avoidance of Spring frosts. Graciano is also a relatively late-ripening variety, and we are not yet certain that we can get it ripe every year. It appears to be particularly sensitive to deficiencies in our soil of boron and zinc, and so foliar sprays of these micro-nutrients are being used to improve vigour.
