The mild summer of 2008 has produced a soft Merlot, flooded with red berry and dark cherry flavours. Deliciously fresh and juicy on the palate, with hints of vanilla and roast coffee in the background.
Merlot struggles a little in our vineyard, with the smallest vine canopies of any variety, light open bunches and small berries. These are packed with flavour, colour and tannin, making wines that ooze chocolate-cherry fruit and can become a little too tannic if not carefully managed in the winery. Time in barrel is very important for softening the wine, and we use a small proportion of some very expensive barrels - we find that Tonnellerie Nadalie (Bordeaux) make barrels with a deep cedary character that really suits this wine. Several years in bottle really help make the wine more succulent too.
