Merlot was planted in 1999 in the first expansion of the vineyard, on the basis that the Merlot (blended with Cabernet Franc) in the original planting was producing very promising wines, recently winning a trophy at the local wine show.
While the soil in this part of the North Block is similar to the rest of the vineyard, it gets very thin towards the top of these rows, and the overall vigour of the Merlot is the lowest of any variety in the vineyard. The result is light crops, and in particular, small berries. This explains the deep colour and abundant tannins of our Merlot wines.
