The inspiration for planting the original block at Mount Majura Vineyard came not only from the limestone-containing soil, but also from the easterly aspect and cool climate, which were seen as similarities with the famous Cote d'Or of Burgundy. Pinot Noir was an obvious choice and accounts for a third of the original block planted in 1988.
This planting was of the MV6 clone, an old Australian clone of Pinot which is actually a very good one, and on our site is characterised by a sweet, biscuity spice. When the vineyard was expanded in 1999 with the planting of the North block, a substantial area of the MV6 clone Pinot was included, as well as six rows of the newer French clone, 114. Four-row portions (each approx 0.2 Ha) of the MV6 have subsequently been grafted to other new French clones, 115 and 777.
