Early summer heat and drought reduce yields before mild conditions in Mar, hand-picked, free-run juice, the cool ferment stopped with 6g/l residual sugar manifested as lime and candied lemon, the flavours building with each additional sip. Lovely wine. Gold medal Winewise Small Vigneron Awards ’19. 95 points (James Halliday)
This is a delicate, perfumed, long-flavoured riesling that shows the typical Canberra District lemon rind aromatics. Another flawless riesling that demonstrates precise winemaking. ★★★★★ (Winewise)
RIESLING
Our original planting of Riesling in the Pines block, the coolest, most south-easterly aspect of our site, has now been supplemented with Riesling grafted onto vines of similar age in the North block, a little steeper and more east-facing. After seventeen vintages, we recognize typical characters that our site produces: white blossom aromatics and citrus characters leaning more towards lemon peel and grapefruit, and often a hint of aniseed.
2019 VINTAGE
This year we celebrate our 30th vintage. Just like last year, the 2018-2019 was the second-warmest season on record behind 2016, this time with some very hot summer weather. A very dry winter saw us applying irrigation prior to budburst for the first time. January was particularly hot, and irrigation was used to prevent heat damage. Subsequent weather during ripening and vintage was good. Yields were down in most varieties, but quality was good, and once again, the later ripening varieties benefitted from the milder conditions, showing great colour and flavour definition.
WINEMAKING
Hand-picked 15-17 March at 11.5 Baumé. Only the free-run juice was taken, settled and fermented cool before stopping at 6.0g/l residual sugar for balance. Bottled under screwcap July 2019, 606 dozen made (plus 96 magnums). Alcohol 12.0% by volume. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with a milk product).
