Very unusually, this wine is not from our own vineyard, hence the slightly different label. Grapes not affected by smoke taint were sourced from two vineyards in the Tamar Valley of Tasmania – one of the other great Riesling regions. This is fascinatingly different to our own, but delicious in its orchard fruits and delicate citrus zest.
Very primary lemon/lime at this stage. Plenty of fruit. Good acidity. Needs time to settle down. (Winewise)
RIESLING
Our original planting of Riesling in the Pines block, the coolest, most south-easterly aspect of our site, has now been supplemented with Riesling grafted onto vines of similar age in the North block, a little steeper and more east-facing. After seventeen vintages, we recognize typical characters that our site produces: white blossom aromatics and citrus characters leaning more towards lemon peel and grapefruit, and often a hint of aniseed.
2020 VINTAGE
Our 2020 vintage was spoiled by smoke taint, so for the first time, we have purchased fruit from further afield, and only for a couple of wines for which we don’t have enough from previous vintages. The 2020 Riesling is made in a similar style to our usual wine, and was sourced from the Chartley Estate and Waterton Hall vineyards in the Tamar Valley of Tasmania, which were unaffected by bushfires.
WINEMAKING
Hand-picked 6 April 2020 at 10.6 Baumé. Fruit was whole-bunch pressed and clarified by flotation. Cool fermentation was stopped with some residual sugar for balance. Bottled under screwcap July 2020, 700 dozen made. Alcohol 12.0% by volume. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with a milk product).
