In the otherwise ripe and lush 2016 vintage, this Cabernet franc, Merlot, Cabernet blend shows typically fragrant raspberry and blackcurrant fruit with hints of mint and earth. Medium bodied and fine but structured, it will cellar well.
Sourced from our original block (planted 1988), this wine is a ‘vineyard blend’ of approximately 57% Cabernet Franc, 27% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was originally labelled ‘Merlot’ (up to 1999), then ‘Cabernet franc Merlot’ (2000, 2001) and then renamed after the founder of our vineyard, Mrs Dinny Killen. It ages particularly elegantly.
The 2015-2016 season was our warmest to date (as measured by Growing Degree Days), illustrating the ongoing effect of global warming. Very hot weather in early Spring ensured that the season was early throughout, with the commencement of harvest (5th Feb for sparkling base) being another record. The season was generally benign, with a warm stretch of weather from mid-February to mid-March bringing many varieties to ripeness at a rapid rate. Irrigation during this time was important to most blocks, and ensured that good yields of high quality fruit were harvested. 2016 would be considered a standout vintage for us if it weren’t slightly shaded by 2015, with the best of the two depending on variety.
Hand picked 11 March 2016 at 12.4 Bé and wild fermented in open vats with hand plunging. Matured in French oak barriques (14% new), lightly fined and filtered. Bottled January 2017, 167 dozen made. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with gelatin).

This wine has been made since out first vintage in 1991 (and screwcap sealed since 2003). It performs well in the cellar. Wines tasted from the winery museum. If your cellaring conditions are less than ideal, consider reducing the expected life of the wine. Tasted August 2015
