A classic example of our TSG blend, this is perfumed and pretty with bright spiced fruits – plum, cherry and blackberry. Flooded with flavour, the palate has some heft as well as poise. ‘None of Mount Majura’s wines is expensive, but the value buy is the TSG, a blend of tempranillo, shiraz and graciano. A lovely wine, again with some eucalyptus but more ready-drinking than the single-block wines, and costing AUD $34.’ (Huon Hooke)

Medium to deep red/purple colour, with a gently gumleaf-minty aroma coupled with red fruit nuances, and the palate is fruit-sweet and deliciously soft, lush and fruit-driven, while not guilty of simplicity. It’s always a great drink… It gets the mix of fruit sweetness and savouriness pretty much perfect. It’s not deep or profound but it’s well flavoured and textured, its berry/cola notes flashes with spice, anise and nuts. It’s juicy and refreshing despite its ripeness; it feels as though it’s in a good head space, and helps put you in one as a result. 91 Points (Campbell Mattinson)

Winemaker's Notes

Our goal is to find the varieties that best suit our site, because we believe that when the right combinations are found, the wines gain an extra level of quality and character. Tempranillo and Shiraz are clearly the leading red varieties for our vineyard and climate, based on our experience so far. After a difficult start, Graciano has become a very rewarding variety, and is very distinctive as a varietal wine. First made from the 2008 vintage, the Tempranillo Shiraz Graciano blend is an example of good components coming together to make an even better whole. The 2016 TSG is 37% Tempranillo, 37% Shiraz and 26% Graciano. By blending, we take the spotlight off the variety, and put it back on the vineyard where it belongs.

The 2015-2016 season was our warmest to date (as measured by Growing Degree Days), illustrating the ongoing effect of global warming. Very hot weather in early Spring ensured that the season was early throughout, with the commencement of harvest (5th Feb for sparkling base) being another record. The season was generally benign, with a warm stretch of weather from mid-February to mid-March bringing many varieties to ripeness at a rapid rate. Irrigation during this time was important to most blocks, and ensured that good yields of high quality fruit were harvested. 2016 would be considered a standout vintage for us if it weren’t slightly shaded by 2015, with the best of the two depending on variety.

Hand picked between 6 March and 14 April 2016, and fermented separately in open vats with hand plunging. Matured in French oak (10% new), blended, lightly fined and filtered, and bottled under screwcap January 2017; 770 dozen made. Alcohol 14.0% by volume. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with gelatin).

In The Cellar

First made in 2008, the TSG (Tempranillo, Shiraz, Graciano) is a consistent high performer and is starting to show its ageing potential. Wines were tasted from the winery museum. If your cellaring conditions are less than ideal, consider reducing the expected life of the wine. Tasted May 2018.

2015 Deep purple red colour. Dark purple and black fruits, very primary. Some smoke and graphite with hints of game. Intense and concentrated on the palate with sweet red berries, currants, chocolate and meaty bay leaf. The palate is balanced, soft and flowing. In a similar vein to the '09, a long life ahead. 2033 Outstanding
2014 Medium ruby-red. Pretty red berry fruit with spice and charry oak. Pepper and fennel, tomato leaf, red berries and cola complexity. Slightly astringent sandy tannins just ahead of the fruit. 2026 Very good
2013 Deep dark red. Gamy, rich and dark, with ripe black fruits, cola, beef stock and graphite. Dark chocolate, roast meats and rosemary complexity, but still primary. Has a nice acid line to balance the ripeness, and fine suede tannins. 2025 Excellent
2012 Medium ruby-red. Red liquorice and red berry fruits with cola, menthol, herbs, pepper and game, complex and attractive. Lighter on the palate and with firm sandy tannins but held together nicely. 2025 Very good
2011 Medium red. Very aromatic with chinotto, spice, leather and pepper, herbaceousness and florals. Fine and elegant with cleansing acidity and tannin, but overall softness and balance. 2023 Very good
2010 Medium red with garnet. Lifted woodspice, cigar box, pepper and red berry/pomegranate fruit, with fruit and spice in lovely balance. Fine and delicious with good fruit and some graciano character showing through. Pretty, lifted and fine, aged character developing with more to come. 2023 Excellent
2009 Dense dark red. Sweet and dark smelling with well-integrated oak and dark fruits. Opens to smoky game, graphite, black cherry and blueberry, violet florals and some undergrowthy complexity. Ripe, round and solid structure with fine sandy tannins. Some great complexity from age but more to come. 2028 Outstanding
2008 Red/garnet edges. Intense nose of lifted woodspice, earth, leather, game, potpourri, quite Rioja-like. Ripe fruit with richness, tempranillo character to the fore. Elegant soft and fine palate with fine sandy tannins. Fully mature and delicious now. 2021 Excellent
